Close up of wildflowers in Kings Canyon National Park, near Sphinx Lakes
Auguries of Innocence
BY WILLIAM BLAKE
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour….
The rest of the poem can be found at
and is well worth it.
Happiness researchers– there’s a line of work for you– have consistently found that the old wisdom is true: it’s the little things. The flowers pictured are tiny, but there were thousands of them and their buddies in alpine meadows above Sphinx Lakes around 10,500 to 11,000 feet. I love the mind stretching contrast between the giant looming peaks above and the tiny wildflowers at one’s feet. I’m not sure what the flowers pictured above are called. If anyone knows a good High Sierra wildflower identification site, let me know.
