The most sophisticated defense

It is said that humor is the most sophisticated defense. I would also like to suggest that we use the term coping mechanism rather than defense. I think we can link it to a lot of other things, but the one I have in mind right now has to do with the whole thing of mindfulness and cognitive therapy. So often we say things when we are also not listening to ourselves– this can be infuriating, but it can also be hilarious. Here’s my example of the moment: Have you ever noticed that when people are impatient, they tend to say, “I just can’t wait!” And when they’re saying it, what are they always doing, thereby proving themselves wrong?
